The sparrows are noisy with their incessant chirruping. Their calls and answers go back and forth, and suddenly I’m hearing the two ticking clocks again even though I’m outside in the garden. I wonder if it’s my parents and I who are, in fact, living in two different dimensions.
My father does not speak much of spiritual matters, at least not in any favourable terms. Sometimes, Mum gets fed up with him and with the same old routine year-in-year-out. But he is a good dad, and it now appears that they have tacitly accepted my presence in the house, and even seem quite pleased with the idea; especially as they are away in royal Edinburgh next weekend and would be glad to have me do the watering and look after the cats, meaning they won’t have to bother the neighbours. I’ll also be getting the place to myself, of course; as I told Mum, they used to bring Mona in to do the job (all except watering) so they can’t have any objection to their daughter taking responsibility. My grandmother Mona, who had been a life-long patient of serial killer GP Harold Shipman, lived to see her doctor jailed, but only after he’d killed a number of her oldest and dearest friends, and until she was nearing 90, whilst my parents were away on holiday, Mona was gardienne du lieu and she loved it.
Together, my mother and father have turned this small-holding, or croft, into an efficient, tidy and beautiful place to live. There are three seperate gardens, one in front, and two at the back – bottom and top; back and front conservatories, a potting shed, wash-house, two small garages and a derlict out-house which was previously a stable; there is even a pond. There is no denying, Mum and Dad have done well for themselves and my brother and I are very lucky to have them as parents.
Understandably, my father, who ran his own business in the insurance trade, is mindful of keeping his property safe. The locks, chains, window-locks and extra precautionary security measures such as burglar lights , mean that we are each our own jailer – presently three of us. Beware of using the greenhouse as a smoking room: you may not be able to get back inside the house. Keys must be carried at all times, and synchronisation of householders’ movements is a pre-requisite to the functioning of daily life.
Synchronisation revolves mainly around the cats who thanks to my night-owl tendencies may now enjoy a late evening hunting session. Like me, they simply jump over the wall into Top Field where a million other creatures and lifeforms exist together alongside the two horses.
